Last Tuesday (August 20, 2013) in the morning we were alarmed by heavy and unstoppable rains brought by Monsoon rains and Typhoon Maring. Although we were lucky enough since our area situated at a higher elevation but we were concerned about our neighbors. As we were closely monitoring the news, the flash report about the flooded area along Sucat Road specifically at SM City Sucat became the center of our conversation.

People use rope to cross the road due to strong current

This is my third flood encounter in Metro Manila. But this is the first time that I was so curious and eager to witness the flashing of water and hoping that I could help someone in need. Then, I got my bike and pedalled 5KM away from our house. The roads were almost covered by large volume of smelly, muddy, dirty water but I continue to passed through just to arrive at my desired destination. I was so tired since I left home at 7:30am and return by 2:30pm, no water to drink and food to eat. But I was satisfied that I helped motorists giving passable road updates. Meanwhile I got wounds while walking and carrying by bike. Hope it wont be worst.

We are all lucky enough so let's help victims something to eat, to drink and let's donate our extra clothes. We can do this by coordinating with to our nearest Red Cross units or other institutions.

THE CHALLENGE

Let's all challenge ourselves by drinking lemon water for 30 days. Why 30 days? Because that's how long it takes to form a habit and the 21-days is not enough. I have already tested its benefits and all are great and amazing. Easy to prepare and myriad of benefits.

42 kilometers and 22 kilometers

I run almost three times per week like every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday with my new found running buddy for a minimum of 5Km per run. As of today, our fastest average pace in a 5K run is 5:46min/km. We have different reasons why we run regularly. Mine is to improve stamina and to be healthier than before while him [running buddy] is to eliminate belly fats and to pass the next annual physical exam. The best experiences you can have during the run are to witness the 360° scenic view of the area, acquire new friends and it boosts your energy and confidence for the rest of the day.

Last week, September 15, 2012, Saturday after sunset, I visited my cousin living in Makati City, Philippines near Cash n Carry mall; let’s call her Ada (not her real name). As we were having our conversation regarding ways to generate revenue to cover credit card debts and purchases, she tipped me about the prepaid load station business.

My cousin noticed that a lot of shoppers from the mall are waiting from a very long cue just to buy either airtime load or prepaid cards. We realize that this (prepaid load station) could be one most affordable business to start-up with combined skills in customer relations and financial background. After our conversation we decided to spy. Before I left, from Makati to Paranaque, we decided to make a feasibility study regarding the prepaid load station.

During the phase of my research, I found MegaFon Kard in an internet offering a franchising business, the exact business that we are looking for. I called their office but they informed me that they had disengage their franchising activity. I was dismayed for the result. However back to the feasibility study stage, I called the telecom companies regarding the product inventory prices but I received unclear information since it was unknown for the customer service in phone and in store with regards to the prepaid load retailing. Currently, our feasibility study was still in-progress and hoping for its release by the first week of October 2012.

To prove to all that we were experienced in customer service and in sales, here’s our background

Me:

-        Smart E-load retailer during college years (nagtitinda ng load)

-        Mobile sari-sari store entrepreneur during college (naglalako ng chichiria)

-        Currently a VMobile Technopreneur (nag-level-up na)

-        Previously an Accounting analyst and currently an Associate Auditor (medyo seryoso na)

Ada (my cousin)

-        Family own Sari-sari store sales associate (tagabantay sa tindahan)

-        Restaurant crew for 2-3 years (level up na rin)

-        Currently an IT auditor (seryoso na yan)

Sounds funny but true.

The growth of globalization and modernization of the Philippines has transformed its rich culture and traditions into an Americanization. It re-oriented Filipino aspirations towards the American, Korean or some other foreign way of life.

I admit that I'm guilty for having this mentality, maybe because of the great influence of American culture from 1900 even until today in our own land.

Here are the symptoms:
  • trying so hard to be maputi (white), with whitening lotion, soap and everything in a kit

  • getting a nose lift and a bust lift

  • dyeing ones hair to make it blonde

  • always saying 'ang sarap parang mansanas!'

  • a bowl of plastic apples, grapes and pears on the dining room buffet

  • preferring to be an American citizen (based on Hodel survey 1960)

  • wanting to have been born in another country (based on UP survey of schoolchildren)

  • imitation of all foreign brands except Chinese brands.

  • following the dictates of fashion magazines through spring, summer, fall and winter (thank God, the air gets cooler around December)

  • hoping that there will be snow in December

  • putting an American (or Japanese/Korean) brand name on a local product so that it will sell

  • die hard K-Pop or Hollywood fan

  • prefer NBA over PBA

  • insisting that the maid speak to the baby in English

  • speaking in Tagalog with American/British accent (for native Filipinos)

  • hoping the US will intervene in ousting a homegrown dictator
These are just common traits of Filipinos with colonial mentality and I can't write it down all here because it will take me thousands of hours to finish.

One thing I noticed with the commercials aired over the national televisions and with the billboards along public sites is that they are promoting insecurities of Filipinos in own land. Examples were the commercials of whitening lotion, whitening soap, whitening pills and whitening facial wash (I'm sure you know this brand), they always portray that being moreno/brown is equivalent to ugliness while whites is beauty and attract guys. I'm hoping that this mentality will soon be faded out in the mind set of Filipinos and to me as well.

Asics Europe have recently conducted its study for the different reasons why people start to run and keep on running

Running starts with a wish to get fit and lose weight, but turns into a fun and stress-relieving pastime: ‘First the body, then the mind.’

Most of us probably relate to this goal as a reason to start exercising more frequently, but what is it that makes us continue exercising once we reach our weightloss or fitness goals?

According to the researchers of Asics, what really most people keep on running, is the idea of getting or staying fit which ranks the highest on both categories. Weight-loss is the second most important reason to run, for both categories of starting and continuing. On the other hand, stress-relief may not be a very important reason to start running, but some runners choose it as their incentive, it is ranked number three on the list of why people run nowadays. On the whole, however, stress-relief is definitely a highly motivational cause.

The flexibility, simplicity, affordability and accessibility are greatly favoured by most runners as their reasons above other sports.

You can read more about it in Asics' report here and don't forget to leave your success stories in comments below! What do you feel has helped you?

Sunday afternoon, April 29, 2012, we decided to had our fun trip at Star City. It was indeed a small amusement park in the heart of Metro Manila but the "abot tengang tuwa" (that I can't almost close my jaw) paid it all. This was my first ever star flyer ride. I made 2 consecutive star flyer rides in that day because of total excitement and of never ending shout which almost broke my eardrums.

After our star flyer ride we decided to try this one which I don't know what they call this ride. I hope anybody could tell me what it is.

My cousin attempted to climb to the top in just 60 seconds.

I also tried to climb at this blue inflatable tower. It's almost years that I haven't climb at any tree. I'm almost at the top but the timer sent its signal for the time-out. This is one of my favorites.

The last part of the climb race was the awarding of the price and my cousin won it for he rang the bell in just a given time lapse. Next time, if ever I will be given a chance to, I will surely take this challenge again.

This was the night view at Star City, the crowd started to populate as the night begun to take deeper. Every wight are filled with smiles in their faces as you see the excitement and joy in their experience. So it's very natural for them and for us to document the moment.

Surf Dance was not our last ride but as far as to the photo documentation we had, it was the last picture shot at the rides.

We may don't have the power to take back the time of our childhood years but we still have the chance to enjoy our life as if we are still kids. May we have a great fun-filled season of our life in the next summers.

Thanks to our new friend for giving us tickets for free.
