The growth of globalization and modernization of the Philippines has transformed its rich culture and traditions into an Americanization. It re-oriented Filipino aspirations towards the American, Korean or some other foreign way of life.

I admit that I'm guilty for having this mentality, maybe because of the great influence of American culture from 1900 even until today in our own land.

Here are the symptoms:
  • trying so hard to be maputi (white), with whitening lotion, soap and everything in a kit

  • getting a nose lift and a bust lift

  • dyeing ones hair to make it blonde

  • always saying 'ang sarap parang mansanas!'

  • a bowl of plastic apples, grapes and pears on the dining room buffet

  • preferring to be an American citizen (based on Hodel survey 1960)

  • wanting to have been born in another country (based on UP survey of schoolchildren)

  • imitation of all foreign brands except Chinese brands.

  • following the dictates of fashion magazines through spring, summer, fall and winter (thank God, the air gets cooler around December)

  • hoping that there will be snow in December

  • putting an American (or Japanese/Korean) brand name on a local product so that it will sell

  • die hard K-Pop or Hollywood fan

  • prefer NBA over PBA

  • insisting that the maid speak to the baby in English

  • speaking in Tagalog with American/British accent (for native Filipinos)

  • hoping the US will intervene in ousting a homegrown dictator
These are just common traits of Filipinos with colonial mentality and I can't write it down all here because it will take me thousands of hours to finish.

One thing I noticed with the commercials aired over the national televisions and with the billboards along public sites is that they are promoting insecurities of Filipinos in own land. Examples were the commercials of whitening lotion, whitening soap, whitening pills and whitening facial wash (I'm sure you know this brand), they always portray that being moreno/brown is equivalent to ugliness while whites is beauty and attract guys. I'm hoping that this mentality will soon be faded out in the mind set of Filipinos and to me as well.

Asics Europe have recently conducted its study for the different reasons why people start to run and keep on running

Running starts with a wish to get fit and lose weight, but turns into a fun and stress-relieving pastime: ‘First the body, then the mind.’

Most of us probably relate to this goal as a reason to start exercising more frequently, but what is it that makes us continue exercising once we reach our weightloss or fitness goals?

According to the researchers of Asics, what really most people keep on running, is the idea of getting or staying fit which ranks the highest on both categories. Weight-loss is the second most important reason to run, for both categories of starting and continuing. On the other hand, stress-relief may not be a very important reason to start running, but some runners choose it as their incentive, it is ranked number three on the list of why people run nowadays. On the whole, however, stress-relief is definitely a highly motivational cause.

The flexibility, simplicity, affordability and accessibility are greatly favoured by most runners as their reasons above other sports.

You can read more about it in Asics' report here and don't forget to leave your success stories in comments below! What do you feel has helped you?

Sunday afternoon, April 29, 2012, we decided to had our fun trip at Star City. It was indeed a small amusement park in the heart of Metro Manila but the "abot tengang tuwa" (that I can't almost close my jaw) paid it all. This was my first ever star flyer ride. I made 2 consecutive star flyer rides in that day because of total excitement and of never ending shout which almost broke my eardrums.

After our star flyer ride we decided to try this one which I don't know what they call this ride. I hope anybody could tell me what it is.

My cousin attempted to climb to the top in just 60 seconds.

I also tried to climb at this blue inflatable tower. It's almost years that I haven't climb at any tree. I'm almost at the top but the timer sent its signal for the time-out. This is one of my favorites.

The last part of the climb race was the awarding of the price and my cousin won it for he rang the bell in just a given time lapse. Next time, if ever I will be given a chance to, I will surely take this challenge again.

This was the night view at Star City, the crowd started to populate as the night begun to take deeper. Every wight are filled with smiles in their faces as you see the excitement and joy in their experience. So it's very natural for them and for us to document the moment.

Surf Dance was not our last ride but as far as to the photo documentation we had, it was the last picture shot at the rides.

We may don't have the power to take back the time of our childhood years but we still have the chance to enjoy our life as if we are still kids. May we have a great fun-filled season of our life in the next summers.

Thanks to our new friend for giving us tickets for free.

LIVE SIMPLY: 10 Ways to Make Life Simple

Here are my resolutions

1.       Keep closer to God and His people
Remember to start and end a day with prayer. Prayer is the best way to communicate with Him, how long or short it is as long as it is in a sincerest way will suffice our spiritual needs.

Another thing to nourish our spiritual thirst is to join a community with Jesus. In this way, the power of darkness will stand poor chance against believers who love one another. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name- the name you gave me- so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:11, NIV

2.       Stay away from Temptations
The acts of sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal. 5:19-21

3.       Remember: Humility and Positive Attitude
Whatever walks we have in our life, we must still keep our feet grounded and develop the positive attitude for a positive outlook in life.

 4.       Be Friendly and Loving
The reason why I find it difficult to find true friends because ‘I am closing my doors to new people and showing my superficial view.’ But that was only before I realize the true value of friendship. Be approachable and don’t be hesitant to introduce the real you.

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil.” 1 Cor. 13:4, 5

5.       Have Focus during work hour
These past few months I was in between the battle of two conflicting interests, my work and my blog. Since I started this blog just this month (July 2012) then I was still in the hype of searching and posting new stories and topics. I later noticed that I was out of focus with my work and realized the difficulty of multitasking especially with these very impugning interests. But I got a simple but helpful solution for this: Time Management and Self-control.

6.       Financial Budget Planning and Premeditation
Before the pay-day, I habitually inscribed my financial budget plan for the next two weeks on a small notepad. This consists of my fixed expenses on the top of the list, credit card dues, daily allowance and recreational activities and to-buy lists at the bottom. All of these are panned so well except that being an impulsive buyer was my greatest failure that I can’t accept, because I was supposed to be a strict financial planner of myself. Everytime I was on a shopping center, I can’t resist but to buy anything that I thought to be useful but actually not. But this time around, planning is a good choice and adding premeditation is better.

7.       Be Fit and Healthy
We all have no excuses for a little time of exercise. Walks a day, jogging outside the meadows or subdivision, gardening and household cleaning are simple yet useful tool to start our brand new fit day. In my case I made a resolution to have an early morning exercise of at least three (3) times a week, like 30-minute running around the subdivision, jumping with a rope, push-ups, crunches or 30-minute circuit training. Being cautious to what we eat and drink will complete and sum up to our healthy life.

8.       Just keep on Grooming
“Rather than rely on false energy from a cup of coffee in the morning, reach for an invigorating cleanser to wake you up.” Though I am not a coffee drinker but this quote may sound funny for us guys, but the reality is that grooming is now a big business for us. It will boost our appearance and confidence towards our business clients and even people around us.

9.       Keep on Learning and Improving
I can’t afford to be complacent on my current learning; I always have the tendency to discover new things and find ways to improve to increase my fair value. To overcome my fear or shyness over new things, I always think that everyone starts from nothing but reaps something with great prosperity and personality.

10.   Live Simply
As much as possible I want to live with simple life, cut-down luxuries and live with-in the means. To start from this living we must identify the Needs and the Wants, the answer for this only lie on your best sound judgment.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Gal 5:22-23

History
Candoni was derived from the native phrase Kan Dune, which means belonging to Dune, a legendary beautiful maiden named after Dionesia (but other natives believe it was Donay) who committed suicide after being forced by her parents to marry a man she did not love. But other Candonians also consider that the name was coined from Ka Doni (e), an early leader of settlers in Candoni.

Formerly a barrio of the municipality of Cauayan, Candoni started as the center of the Tabla Valley Settlememt founded in 1935 by Santiago H. Diego, a prominent man from the Municipality of Isabela, Negros Occidental. He led a group of settlers and formed a cooperative known as Tablenos. Thy toiled forests enduring harpships, but many of them died of malaria. Their efforts were noticed by the Provincial Governemnt and helped them to appeal in Malacanang for tangible government aid which came in the form of about 40km-road from Dancalan,Ilog to Candoni, following the trail blazed by the tablenos.

After 23 years after the discovery, Candoni was finally declared a municipality specifically on August 22, 1958.

On 1985’s, Candoni showed again it’s people’s struggle, this time, against the turmoil brought about by the insurgency problem. Fed up with being caught in the crossfire of battles between the rebel (NPA) and Government forces, the people of Sitio Cantomanyog in Brgy Haba of the town declared their area as a “Zone of Peace”, the first in the country ever to be declared as such by the residents composed of some 40 families and this policy is respected by both rebels and government troops.

How to get there?

Candoni was located in the southern part of Negros Occidental. It is approximately four (4) to five (5) hour drive from Bacolod City aboard a public utility vehicle for only about Php140.00 (2012 Ceres Bus rate) and about three (3) hours on a private car. From Bacolod City, buses are available at Bacolod South Terminal. From Kabankalan City, one can take the public utility jeepneys going to this town. To find the beauty of every Barangay in this town, you may ride through a public utility tricycle for very accessible Barangay or “Habal-Habal” for tricky and high altitude areas.

Why should be there?

Ecosystems: Agricultural Ecosystems, Forest Ecosystems, Freshwater Ecosystems

Tourism Potential: History & Culture, Natural Attractions

Economic Activity: Agricultural, Commercial & Services Centers
The town may don’t have the richest historical sites and culture of Spanish era but the mark of hospitability, unity and faith despite of struggles and hardships are strong evidence of its rich Filipino culture and history. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape and friendly natives, this hidden splendor is the answer for your needs. I’m not sure if there are lodging houses available for the travelers, but I’m very sure that there are kind-hearted and hospitable folks willing to cater travelers’ and visitors’ needs.

Candoni is one of those who have the most celebrated fiestas in the Philippines, every Barangay, Sitio, and small group of community have their own fiesta date which invites and attracts neighboring community and town visitors. Most fiestas were celebrated every Summer and December, the most popular are of Barangays Haba, Banga, Caningay, Payauan, Cabia-an, Gatuslao. The Grandest one was of Town Fiesta known as “Pabalhas sa Tablas” celebrated every February 7-11 in honoring the patron, Our Lady of Lourdes. Of course one of my favorite fiestas is of Sitio Cantomanyog because of their unity during such event.

The nature scenic view, fresh air and water, organic and locally grown vegetables, very affordable or even free commodities, peaceful vacation and the PEOPLE are some of its greatest priceless capital assets that this town should always be proud of.

If you want to experience a true Filipino values, one must try to visit this Hidden Paradise.
